Kenroku-en

There are three best parks in Japan. Kairaku-en in Mito, Koraku-en in Okayama and Kenroku-en in Kanazawa. "EN" means garden or park in Japanese.

Kenrokuen is definitely the most popular tourist attraction in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture. Kanazawa is a prefectural capital of Ishikawa prefecture and former capital of Kaga domain, one of the richest domains during Edo era, when Tokugawa shogunate ruled Japan. The domain was ruled by feudal Maeda clan at that time.


The gardens contain roughly 8700 trees and 180 species of plants in total.

Then, special points of interests are:


  • the oldest fountain in Japan - operated by natural water pressure.

  • a teahouse, the oldest building in the gardens built in 1774.

  • Karasaki Pine tree

  • Kaiseki pagoda

  • Ganko bridge, made of eleven red stones

  • Kotoji stone lantern


 Kenroku-en is open daily from 7AM to 6PM(from 8AM to 5PM in winter).

Admission is JPY 320 - adult / JPY 100 - child between age of 6 to 17.
